Joe Loesch is The Red Baron

Today I'm playing the roll of Baron Manfred von Richthofen "The Red Baron" most decorated fighter pilot of WWI. This audiobook "Early Aviation - Birds of War" is a product of Readio Theatre, LLC.

Manfred von Richthofen had not planned on becoming a pilot in Germany's aviation corps. He enlisted in the army and because of his family's social status, was given a commission as a cavalry officer in 1911. Richthofen, with cavalry operations slowing down, transferred to the flying service. When he learned he could get into action quicker as an observer than as a pilot, he took the observers seat. While serving as an observer, his squadron carried out bombing missions and Richthofen learned fast. He took flight training and became a pilot. On April 24th, 1916, Baron Richthofen shot down his first enemy airplane, a French Nieuport, but, the Nieuport crashed in French territory and the kill could not be confirmed. Richthofen's skill and daring was becoming noticed and he was invited to join Oswald Boelcke's Jasta 2, Germany's most celebrated air fighter group.

Manfred von Richthofen became a German hero. Little boys followed his exploits and built toy red airplanes and pretended they were flying alongside him. His fame reached far past German borders and the name "The Red Baron" was a familiar one as far away as America.
